Wigs and alopecia

Some practical information

We are not doctors.

The information we provide here is of a general nature, and is only intended to provide the best type of wig for your personal needs. For more precise and detailed medical information, please contact your attending physician, specialist, or the facility that is treating you.

Alopecia is a rare disease. Indeed: a collection of diseases, most of them rare and complex. It is therefore much studied, but in many ways still little known. Suffice it to say that a single class of alopecia, that of hereditary non-scarring alopecia, occurs in over 120 different types.

Its psychological, as well as physical, consequences can be devastating and disabling. As far as we can, we try our best to make these consequences as bearable as possible.

There are forms of total or partial alopecia; affecting only the hair or the hair bulbs of the whole body; temporary or permanent; hereditary, acquired, psychogenic... We do not venture into the great sea of medical alopecia: we refer to much more rigorous reading, and to the word of experts such as one's own doctor or dermatologist.

Only one thing we can do, and that is try to answer the following question:

What is the most suitable wig for a woman suffering from a permanent or long-lasting form of alopecia?

Here we can answer, objectively, using our daily experience, gained over many years: there is no one type of wig, nor one solution that fits all.

The preferred options are usually the following two (please refer to another page of the site for more detailed information on each material):

Natural hair

Because of its durability, and even more because of the possibility of customising the style, many women suffering from alopecia durabilis tend towards the purchase of a natural hair wig, which gives them more opportunities to "play" with their hair, as they would with their own personal hair.

The traditional synthetic fibre

Many other women suffering from long-lasting alopecia opt instead for the traditional fibre: fewer maintenance problems, and above all the possibility of changing it more often, and having it "always new", thanks to its lower purchase cost.

It is a matter of choices, in the end, and, we repeat, there is no single answer that fits all.

Technological developments have made available two further possibilities, which are increasingly being considered to solve the problem of women with alopecia:

The heat-resistant synthetic fibre

It is an alternative to natural hair, especially at times when the latter is in short supply: the style can be changed at will, and the price is much more affordable. However, careful and constant maintenance is necessary.

The natural hair/heat-resistant fibre mix

This is the latest material used for high-quality wigs. Each wig is made from a mixture of natural hair and heat-resistant fibre, in varying proportions depending on the style and colour. The end result, from every point of view, is somewhere between heat-resistant fibre and natural hair. We could say that you have (almost) the performance of natural hair, at a slightly lower price.

What counts above all, in our opinion at Parrucche Lanza, is that the wig purchased is a Medical Device (the seller must declare and guarantee this), from a clearly identified manufacturer, and recognised as a producer of quality articles. The seller, for his part, must guarantee assistance in the choice and competence in providing anempathetic and efficient service. Then each person can act according to his or her own preferences, possibilities and experience.
